Kemiart forerunner award for innovative brand packaging won by Calzados Trueno & Cartonajes Santorroman of Spain

M-real Consumer Packaging has presented the Kemiart Forerunner Award 2009 to Calzados Trueno, the Spanish producer of high quality safety footwear, and its corrugated packaging supplier, Cartonajes Santorroman. The prize was presented for Trueno’s safety shoe boxes and table-top display, both of which used Kemiart Graph coated white top kraftliner.
Risto Auero, VP Sales, Linerboards & Speciality papers, in M-real, explained the judges’ decision: “The shoe box and the display reproduce the brand image of Trueno brilliantly, and differentiate Trueno’s safety footwear from the global competition. The shoes weigh over two kilos a pair, requiring strength and durability in both boxes and the display. The packaging also requires less space during transportation and warehousing, and is easy to disassemble and recycle.”
Calzados Trueno are delighted with the award, which is a tribute to the results achieved by Santorroman. Its new high range product line needs to be supported by both high quality boxes and display units that can convey the message of the advanced products and design. The environmental aspects from production through warehousing, transportation and to disposal also have to be taken into account.
The Trueno shoe box is a one piece structure designed without any need for clamps or glue. When the sheet is folded it forms a three-panel side wall that provides strength to support a stack of the same boxes. The display is easy to assemble and has very low unit cost compared to those made from metal or plastic. It is light and cost-effective to send by post to retailers.
Both the shoe package and display are challenging printing jobs, because of the large size of the printing area, and with a demanding print design combining both solid and screen printed black areas. A streaked aluminium surface effect printed across the flute direction also increased the difficulty of the printing. Santorroman was able to produce excellent results by using Kemiart Graph.
Now presented for the eighth time, the Kemiart Forerunner Award is open to companies in the industry for innovative brand packaging using M-real’s Kemiart coated liners. Entrants must have developed new end-use applications for coated liners or created packaging designs that add value to branded products. Award-winning companies are those that recognise the power of packaging and the importance of combining an effective graphic message with accurate colour shade control.
