Production
Economic use of resources

From an environment point of view, production has traditionally considered the most significant stage of board and paper making as processes that use a large amount water and energy. Thus, the main environmental issues associated with pulp and paper production are energy consumption and emissions to water and air.

M-real’s production processes are based on the economic use of resources and on minimising the environmental impact of the products throughout their life cycle. To reduce emissions and residuals and save energy, our mills use internal and external purification and recovery technology as well as perform their production processes at a consistently high level.

All our mills have certified ISO 14001 environmental management systems. Additionally, the Äänekoski (paper unit) and Hallein mill areas are also certified by EMAS, the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme. The units continually improve their environmental performance by setting environmental development targets and conducting improvement projects. Progress is monitored and reported regularly.
