M-real communicates its product-specific environmental data through Paper Profile declarations, which have been published since 2001 and are available for all of the company's board and paper products.
Paper Profile is a one page environmental product declaration developed by European paper manufacturers. Today, more than ten companies participate in the Paper Profile system, which uses a standard format for product declarations and commonly agreed calculation rules. Paper Profile declarations are issued for individual products and provide data on product composition and key environmental parameters (e.g. COD, AOX, SO2, CO2, waste). The declarations also include environmental management and Chain-of-Custody systems adopted at the producing mills and information on wood procurement.
In addition to using the commonly agreed Paper Profile declaration, M-real has developed two supplements. One includes data about the producing mill, transports and how to handle the product after use. The other supplement, published since 2004, reports on the origin and certification of wood.
The reported share of certified wood is the actual percentage of certified wood in the fibre raw material chain to the producing mill. By reporting these figures, M-real is not guaranteeing that the products can be sold as certified to any scheme.
